fall 2009 newsletter - 3oth Anniversary!
The Clinic practice started in 1979 and the first office location was opened at Hennepin and Lake in the Uptown area of south Minneapolis. Dr. Stanton Peele came to speak on behalf of the practice in 1981 and the response was very enthusiastic. TV/radio appearances in the 1980’s increased visibility, awareness and support for a program based in specializing in AA Alternatives. In 1987, Dr. Herbert Fingarette published his groundbreaking work Heavy Drinking: The Myth of Alcoholism as a Disease. James Christopher founded Seculars on Sobriety and Dr. Kirkpatrick made headway in founding Women For Sobriety. The 90’s saw an explosion of new approaches with Jack Trimpey and Rational Recovery leading the way. ‘Harm Reduction’ programs became more acceptable. SMART Recovery vaulted to the forefront in offering national and local leadership.
Cumbersome State rules and the disruption in the overall health care system has made it difficult to ‘make advances’ in this most recent decade. The past few years has been spent trying to find a way to ‘fit in and get along’ with the conventional system. Nonetheless, there have been some advances. Tamara Grams has expanded the availability of AA Alternatives with her program in St. Paul. A new residential program in Iowa (St. Gregory’s) has become the first place to exclusively use the work of Dr. Stanton Peele and his Life Process Program. Rational Recovery and SMART Recovery lead the way nationally in helping internet users gain improved access to alternative information.
The Clinic is based on the notion of ‘Individualized Recovery/Chemical Health’ thru study and application of materials which are ‘The Best of The AA Alternatives’. Participants are introduced to the basics of Muscala Chemical Health, SMART Recovery, Rational Recovery, Women/Men For Sobriety, Dr. Stanton Peele’s Life Process Program, Prochaska’s Change Techniques and books by Tom Horvath, Jeffrey Schaler, Anne Fletcher and Joseph Volpicelli. Each participant is encouraged to do more in-depth study of the programs/study materials that are best suited to their personal needs and interests. Materials are incorporated in the treatment plans of Clinic clients. Members of the public (who are not Clinic clients) are also introduced to these approaches by attending any of three weekly group activities.
No Fee/Donation For Up to 10 Group Meetings
Interested observers, general members of the community, family members and prospective clients can participate in up to ten group meetings with no fee/donation. After that, you can arrange to be on a voluntary donation, no cost or reduced fee plan. Regular clinic clients pay a surcharge/fee that makes it possible for others to participate on an ongoing basis at low or no cost.
Cut Out Sugar Drinks
In Your Diet Efforts
Johns Hopkins University recently found that people who cut liquid calories from their diets lose more weight and keep it off longer than those who cut food calories. Reducing sugared sodas and fruit juice from your diet may be as important as cutting out calories in other ways!
Lose 5 Pounds and
Reduce Health Costs by $400 year
Lots of studies are now emerging that help us to understand how obesity is possibly the ‘biggest’ reason for spiraling health costs. Recent findings indicate that a patient of ‘average weight’uses $4,600 LESS in health services each year than patients who are overweight.
Talk About Your Progress
Like President Obama Talks About
“I've said before that, as a former smoker, I constantly struggle with it. Have I fallen off the wagon sometimes? Yes. Am I a daily smoker, a constant smoker? No. I don't do it in front of my kids, I don't do it in front of my family, and I would say that I am 95 percent cured, but there are times where I mess up. ….I don't know what to tell you, other than the fact that, like folks who go to AA, once you've gone down this path, then it's something you continually struggle with…..”
Notice that he refers to himself as a former smoker even though he is still smoking.
He also describes himself as 95% cured.
Answering questions WITH OPTIMISM is not the same as answering them CORRECTLY.
Example: ‘As someone with any kind of addictive habit, I constantly struggle with it. I’ve had lapses – but I am fully committed to making change. I have made change. There are times I mess up but I will never give up. I’m not completely cured but I’m definitely more than 50%!”
